Bike Trip planning and things to consider
Planning for a Bike Trip, awesome idea to enjoy the vacation and let me help you plan your trip effectively. Being a hard fan of Bike trip trips, I am really enthusiastic to write about the prime requirements of these trips so that you can also enjoy the trip in with utmost dedication and safety.
Some of the guidelines may be known to you and some may not, but it is my moral duty to choke out all in sum and discuss so that you should not miss any out of them. Experience of mine and friends is used to create this blog but then also suggestions are most welcomed by any means. Let’s start with the basic part of it:
Choose perfect Bike:
Simply means that you should go for a bike which gives you comfort while riding during your Bike Trip. If you already have a bike then you must know whether it is comfortable or not for you. Because short distance comfort does not matter, but when it comes to the long bike trip, then the prime requirement shifts to be in a comfortable position while driving. Thought of long Bike drive in your mind must force you to give attention to some important things like comfort, stability, power, weight, smooth handling, reliability after service, less maintenance cost, and many more.
To undertake a Bike Trip, you must have a bike with sufficient power and best performance to let you enjoy the ride. Also, it must have sufficient space to pack your luggage plus little extra space for your back support. There are many good companies offering bikes for expedition and you can choose out of some like, Royal Enfield Bullet, Harley, and some others.
If you are not having such bikes than you can even take the same bikes on rent from the agencies in metropolitan cities like Delhi, Gurgaon, Chandigarh an also in hilly towns like Manali and Leh. If at all you don’t want to pay extra for renting and all, than a normal bike can also be used for the expedition but it has some limitations like less power ( a great hurdle in mountain riding ), not good for the long drive (so ultimately not suitable for biking expedition) less space. After having minute attention to all these factors you must choose a good bike to start your biking expedition.
Go for in-depth servicing of Bike:
Timely servicing of your vehicle is required but it becomes utmost necessary when you are planning a long Bike Trip. Each and every minute part and accessories must be checked during service in person by you and no loose fittings and attachments should be left out after the servicing. Brake, Acceleration, Engine and Lubrication part must be intensely checked for correctness. Brakes must not be too sluggish or too hard.
Go and check the serviceability of tyres and if felt a need, must be replaced in advance. Tyre pressure must be kept within limits all the time and you should keep checking tyre for it. As low pressure can cause wear and tear of the tyre while excess pressure may result in a blast of the tyre.
It is not at all required to mention that what all driving-related documents you must carry but then also you can take these lines as crosscheck measures. Documents which all must be available with you all the time during your Bike trip includes:
Registration Certificate (RC),
Driving License (DL), Valid Pollution Certificate,
Insurance certificate (if possible bike must be fully insured and not just third party isurance),
Permission letters to cross the border if at all required and also for accessing any prohibited area.
You will have to produce these documents on each checkpoint so all must be readily available and kept safe.
For the biking expedition, it is very much necessary that Fuel must be sufficient at all the time and to cater to this you must have knowledge about nearby petrol filling stations en route. If you are planning your expedition to such area especially far-flung areas like Spiti Valley, Leh, etc where there is very little chance that you can get access to filling stations. In those situations, an extra container to carry fuel in it must be carried for additional requirements, and also fuel must be refilled as and when possible.
Tools/Accessories required :
As you are planning to travel a long journey in the next few days or months by your comfortable bike. You must give a thought that you are not going to have access to repair shops throughout the way. Especially in hilly areas, it is very tedious to find a bike servicing or repair shop even in populous towns and that also will be closing very soon in evening hours. So to be on the safe side and to ensure safety you should carry some the tools and accessories with you which can be useful in odd times.
In addition to the tool kit supplied by a company with a bike, some miscellaneous accessories like
Portable Air Pumps,
Multipurpose knife, Tie wraps,
Spare Lubrication oil,
and spare Tyre Tube ( for both tubeless and tube tire for emergency).
you may ask a question as to why to keep the tube when having a tubeless tire fitted with Bike?… It’s a logical question, but then also to be on the safe side, if tire got punctured and you did not get any repair shop then you can use a tube in the tire till repair, after inflating it to the required pressure.
First Aid Medical Kit:
As you are going for a long Bike Trip, so it is not at all possible that you will have access to medical attendants all the way. In addition, long driving in different climate and roads can also cause physical stress and fatigue to your body. So it is necessary to carry small Travel Medical Kit or pouch in which some general medicine to be kept ready to use. If really feels so, must consult the doctor as soon as you have access to the hospital on the trip.
Tablets/Medicine must be kept handy for Fever, Cold and Cough, Headache, Anti-Allergic, Common Pain Relief, Vomiting, Loose Motion, Anti-Acid – Antacid. You must ask advice from a medical expert before purchasing these. It will be helpful for you when you are camping outside or staying at a location where no medics available and for detailed information on which medicine you must buy, please go through Travel Medical Kit.
Biking expedition throws challenges in front of you in terms of harsh weather, bad roads, dead turns, bumpy rides, and others that also with minimal servicing support. So the dress you wear while riding must be comfortable, safe, should not create obstacles in movement, protect you from all weather or in nutshell must be rough and tough.
Dressing in terms of safety include following items but all items should be of good quality:
a Helmet to avoid head injury,
Good Sunglasses as the sun shines brighter in hilly areas compared to the plains, hand gloves,
Knee Protectors to avoid Knee Injury during dear turns,
Rain Gear plus clothing,
Comfortable Trousers and T-shirts.
Must carry enough Undergarments to cater to all weather like rain, scorching heat, heavy cold, etc.
Pack bare minimum clothing to avoid large bag pack so that ride can be easy and good going.
Parking your bike/vehicle must make a serious entry in your planning list. Booking of stay should be done keeping the parking facility in mind, and if no facility with the hotel than check for alternatives. If not finding a good option then you must check for proper parking space to park the vehicle before marching to the hotel. Parking space must be well protected, safe, registered with the state government or local authorities.
Less spicy food and if possible fruits only
During a bike trip, it is highly possible that you may not get a proper diet at your time, and also the food you get may not be healthy enough. having unhealthy food that also at improper timing can cause acidity as well as digestion related problems. it is recommended for you to have limited or negligible foods that are spicy and consume enough liquid and fruits in place. it will save you from dehydration plus fibers in fruit will keep you energetic and you will not feel hungry.
Apart from the important points discussed with you in the blog, there are some general points which can be useful for you to plan your travel like:
Pack your bag pack and tie it on the bike such that it does not cause you discomfort while driving. It is a long way to go and if you keep on adjusting your bag it will be hectic to explore the destinations.
It is recommended that you always plan your travel in groups as it will increase safety and also provide you an opportunity to have great friendship en route.
If possible do carry chocolates with you while biking to distribute to children along the way. This will create a positive impact on the younger generation and also create a supportive environment for future bikers.
Nowadays bikers use to ride with a camera mounted on helmets which helps them to capture the live recording.
It is advisable to have all the items personnel but if you are just an occasional biker than you can take maximum items on rent like Bike gears, helmet, camera, fuel containers, go pro camera, including Bike itself.
